YC Review: The Kings Of Summer

Why Live When You Can Rule?

Being a film fanatic there is nothing better than stumbling across a fantastic film. One of these is The Kings Of Summer. I watched it thanks to the availability on Amazon Prime Instant Video.

I love a good quirky coming-of-age film. But if someone described this film to me, I'd probably turn away. It's about three teenage boys who, fed up with their previous lives, run away and build a house in the woods. An odd concept, but the story is fantastic. Starring Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, and Moisés Arias as the three boys, they 'fend for themselves' and learn to grow into men.

The beginning and the beginning of the end are the weaker parts, the beginning when trying to find reasons for the teens to run away, they're not particularly great reasons, but very typical teenage ones. I've outgrown my teenage years, do teens still run away because their dad makes awkward jokes? The end gets a little bit too love triangly for my liking, but I guess that's the conflict they decided on.

There are some real treasures in the cinematography, the opening image of the drumming of the pipe with the excellently weird Biaggio (Arias) who most of the time steals the show, and some beautiful shots in the forest make this film immerse you into its oddness. There are some great laughs and jolly moments too, not all from Biaggio, but mainly.

The film shows liberation of the stresses of real life. Whether you're a teen or a grown up like myself, it has an escapist fantasy to it. The acting is brilliant from the whole cast, and some of the film is sheer brilliance.

I'm giving this film 9 Yellow Chocolate slabs out of 10. It's not perfect, but it is brilliant, and definitely deserves more success than it has seen. I love it.

THE NIGHT IS STILL YOUNG.
